The objective of the KAIROS-BIOCIR project is to contribute to improve the agri-food sector in Spain under a bio-circular economy perspective and considering a life cycle thinking approach. The project is built on key food and nutrition priorities structured in three subprojects:
i. Building climate smart food systems adaptive to climate change, conserving natural resources and contributing to climate change mitigation;
ii. Implementing resource-efficient circular economy principles across the whole agri-food system while reducing its environmental footprint;
iii. Designing sustainable and healthy diets for good health and wellbeing.
The KAIROS-BIOCIR Project is a joint designed project (coordinated by University of Cantabria and two other universities: University of Lleida-UdL and ESCI-UPF) that promotes cooperation among different research teams and institutions and policy makers as stakeholders of the project, considering the needs of the agro-industry by means of several case studies.
The research team DBA-UdL is the one responsible for subproject ii, with the aim of developing and testing circularity and resource efficiency of agri-food systems. To this aim, case studies on agri-food products (ie., chicken meat production), packaging eco-design and waste valorization (ie., spent coffee grounds) will be evaluated for improvement and tested using adapted circularity indicators developed within the project.
The results from the KAIROS-BIOCIR Project will be relevant to support implementing policies and initiatives aimed to turn the Spanish agri-food sector into a forerunner in bio-circular economy.
