TEX-FOOTPRINT PROJECT – feasibility study for the creation of a digital tool with artificial intelligence able to calculate the environmental impacts associated with textile and fashion products

The objective of the TEX-FOOTPRINT project is to analyze the feasibility of creating a digital tool which incorporates artificial intelligence and facilitates the eco-design of textile products for the reduction of environmental impacts throughout their entire life cycle (from raw materials until textile-products’ end-of-life after their use). Specifically, an exhaustive analysis of all the processes involved in the entire value chain will be carried out, to establish the criteria to be used in modeling each life-cycle stage and to calculate their associated impacts.

Within the project, a pilot test will be carried out and, as an example, the tool for calculating a single impact, climate change, will be produced. This tool will be developed from data about 4 or 5 types of textile-products, provided by the participating companies. The tool will be checked and improved based on the inputs received from the companies.

The project is part of various European strategies, for example the Green Deal and the Circular Economy Action Plan, which identify the textile sector as one of the priority action sectors in Europe. The objective of these initiatives is to promote an European market for more sustainable and circular textile products, by increasing the life-spam of textile products, their recycling rate and the use of recycled raw materials through eco-design.
